   Après avoir passé un partenariat (entre 2001 et 2003) avec le moteur de recherche Google pour sa recherche avancée, Yahoo! développe sa propre technologie (YST: Yahoo! Search Technology) suite à l’acquisition de plusieurs sociétés spécialisées dans ce domaine: Inktomi, AltaVista, Overture, AlltheWeb et Fast (ces deux dernières par le biais du rachat d’Overture). Yahoo! Search est lancé aux Etats-Unis en février 2004, avant un développement international. Lancé en juillet 2005 en version bêta, Yahoo! Audio Search permet de rechercher des fichiers audio sur le web. En novembre 2006, 25% des recherches effectuées sur un moteur de recherche sont effectuées sur Yahoo! Search, 50% sur Google, 8% sur Live Search (Microsoft) et 6% sur AOL.
